3 day hike at a glance: Forellenhof-Rhaunen-Sohren-Altlay

Stage 15-16-17 on the Saar-Hunsrück Climb

This challenging three-day hike takes you on three stages on the Saar-Hunsrück Climb, one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Germany. By staying three nights in different accommodations you will have the opportunity to get to know this beautiful area even better.

Route description and accommodation

Day 0:

• Arrival in Schneppenbach, where you can park your car during your hike
• Overnight stay at the Alpaca Blick Apartment

Day 1:
Stage 15 on the Saar-Hunsrück Climb:
From Bundenbach to Rhaunen

The route

Difficulty: medium

Distance: 12,2 km

Duration: 4:00 h

This stage offers a lot of natural silence in the impressive and original river landscape of the Hahnenbach valley. Shortly after the start we experience great views of the medieval Schmidtburg.
Then we reach the visitor mine with refreshment stop, where slate was mined. Afterwards, a reconstructed Celtic settlement can be visited.

The path then sometimes follows the stream directly, sometimes a bit distant the course of the Hahnenbach. In the last part it goes over the Wartenberg, which offers beautiful views of Rhaunen and its surroundings at some points.

Overnight stay in the heart of Rhaunen in a fully equipped modern apartment.

Day 2:
Stage 16 on the Saar-Hunsrück Climb:
from Rhaunen to Sohren

The route

Distance: 19,4km

Duration: 6:00 h

From Rhaunen, the trail accompanies the Idarbach with its historic mills for four kilometers.
From the Reitzenmühle, the trail runs together with the two stunning loops “Kappleifelsen-Tour” and “Via Molarum” through a forest section.

Between Laufersweiler and Niederweiler we experience an atmospheric alternation of forest and agriculturally used meadow landscapes. We first pass through a wooded area and then through an idyllic meadow landscape until we reach the medieval village of Dill, with its imposing castle ruins and the baroque village church.
Behind the Dillerbach we follow a reconstructed section of the old Roman road and shortly afterwards reach the replica of a Roman watchtower. Then we follow the course of an old railroad line with great views of the Idarkopf and its surroundings to Sohren. On the north side, an access road about one kilometer long leads to the center.

Overnight stay at the Hotel Berghof in Sohren

Day 3:
Stage 17 on the Saar-Hunsrück Climb:
from Sohren to Altlay

The route

Distance: 10,5km

Duration: 3:30 h

After a great breakfast buffet at Hotel Berghof you can prepare for the next stage. The stage leads to a great viewpoint with a view of the Idarkopf and surroundings. Passing an old Jewish cemetery, the route leads through forest to the geographical center of Rhineland-Palatinate with opportunities to rest.
After a beautiful forest passage you reach a plateau, which offers an outstanding panoramic view over the entire Hunsrück to the Mosel valley.

At another vantage point, we catch sight of the runway of Hahn Airport and, with a bit of luck, can see planes landing directly in front of us.
The trail then dips down into a quiet rustic stream valley with very beautiful forest stands. After a short climb we reach our destination Altlay.

Overnight stay at Hotel Morschbach

After breakfast we will drive you back to Rhaunen.
